Calm a Crying Baby
Expert Q&A
Question:
Can I use a handmade quilt in my newborn's crib?
Answer:

NO. Until a baby can easily move about it is not recommended because the baby can become trapped under the quilt and possibly suffocate. Therefore, I suggest only using the quilt as a cover on the changing table or as a wall hanging away from the baby's crib until the baby is older (about 1 year).

My recommendation comes from experience of coming across this same problem when my first of three children was born. Also, when I wrote (and published) a child safety book, < a href=http://www.amazon.com/Safe-Sound-Child-Leslie-Stone/dp/0673362434/pregnancytoday>The Safe & Sound Child (Good Year Books, 1996), I asked this same question to many pediatricians because I was unsure of what to do too.
