Calm a Crying Baby
Expert Q&A
Question:
My daughter is constantly getting into dirt -- from houseplants to her sisters' sandbox. My concern is that she often eats it. Why does she do this? Is she missing something in her diet?
Answer:

The theory that kids (or adults) eat dirt or other non-foods because their bodies need something in it has not supported by scientific evidence. She probably plays in the dirt because it is fun and messy! Dirt and sand contain lots of bacteria, so it is a good idea to keep her from eating it and wash her hands well after playing in it. You may need to keep houseplants out of her reach for now.
