Calm a Crying Baby
Expert Q&A
Question:
What causes a baby to turn orange when fed carrots?
Answer:

"Carotenemia" is the word for turning orange from eating foods high in beta carotene (such as lots of carrots or sweet potatoes). I once worked with a man who drank many glasses of carrot juice a day which turned his skin a nice shade of orange! Carotenemia is caused by eating lots of beta carotene-rich foods over time -- it doesn't appear after one plate of carrots. It is generally not harmful, and goes away when the person stops eating the orange veggies, but in a baby it probably means not enough variety in the diet. This baby likely needs to branch out and try other veggies like peas, green beans and broccoli.
