Expert Q&A
We have a 6-month-old baby and are beginning to introduce solid foods to his diet. We eat very little meat and don't really want him to eat much, either. What are the recommendations for meat replacements that we can use at this age?
Right now, iron-fortified infant formula or breast milk is supplying the bulk of your baby's protein, and that's fine. Once baby hits 7 months, you may introduce egg yolk (but not the white, since some babies are allergic at this age) and finely chopped poultry, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics' Guide to Your Children's Nutrition (Villard, 1999). At 9 months, go ahead and offer cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt (full-fat) and mashed beans. Baby can have whole eggs by 1 year old, which is the time you will also be offering full-fat cow's milk.
