Calm a Crying Baby
Expert Q&A
Question:
My 11-month-old son is a picky eater; he'll only eat few bites than leaves the rest. I'm so desperate. I've tried everything, changing the menu, everything, but he seems not interested with his meals. He's lost weight, is there anyone who can help me, please?
Answer:
Babies go through stages where they become very picky eaters, but this seems to be more than that. I strongly urge you to take this issue up with your son's pediatrician ASAP, and ask him/her for an immediate referral to a registered dietitian as well. Also, go out and buy Ellen Satter's books, Child of Mine: Feeding with Love and Good Sense, and a more recent one specifically targeting feeding issues, How to Get Your Kid to Eat ... But Not Too Much (it addresses babies who under eat).

In the meantime, offer well balanced meals even if he refuses to eat certain items (always include at least one thing you know he'll eat). Limit formula (or breast milk, harder to gauge) to 24 to 32 ounces per day and juice to 4 to 6 ounces per day (water on demand, as you deem appropriate). Provide a pleasant environment for your son and give him plenty of loving attention away from food-related situations. Children and babies sense your exasperation surrounding meals, and it makes them even more tense. These are only a FEW factors involved.

Begin keeping a detailed food diary of everything you offer you son (exact amounts) and type of food (save labels if unusual); how much of each food/beverage he consumes; time of day each thing is offered; environment (home, away, quiet, lots of distractions, etc); you'll need to bring at least a three-day diary to the dietitian for a calorie count (doctor should order).
