Calm a Crying Baby
Expert Q&A
Question:
How much breast milk should a 6-month-old consume, and does breast milk mixed with cereal count towards her total?
Answer:
On average your 6 month old baby should consume 28 ounces (range 24 to 32 ounces) in a 24-hour period. And yes, the breast milk that you've just begun to introduce in cereal does count toward that total.

Unless you are always pumping and then offering the breast milk in a bottle, it will be difficult to gauge the exact number of ounces the baby consumes. Hence, make sure to offer about five feedings of breast milk per day (3 meal feedings and two of the three snacks in a day) and the baby should get enough, but not too much. You can gradually begin weaning directly to a sippy cup now too (using pumped breast milk or formula). This might seem early for this, but give it a try at one of the meals or snacks; it's amazing how they catch on at such a young age.
