Expert Q&A
Question:
Can children be allergic to strawberries? I want to let my 1-year-old try them.
Answer:

Strawberries seem to especially be a common cause of food allergy or sensitivity in children. For that reason, I would not recommend giving strawberries to a child under the age of 2. This is especially important if there is any family history of food allergies or if there have been other food allergies identified in the child. Strawberry allergies affect thousands, with symptoms ranging from swelling and itching to much more severe reactions that require immediate emergency medical attention and can even lead to death.

If someone in your family is allergic to strawberries or other types of berries, it may be wise to talk to your doctor. And if allergies do not run in the family, it's still a good idea to watch your child closely after his first taste.
