To begin with, a two-handled cup with a sippy cover is the easiest for children to handle. As they gain dexterity, changing over to a cup without handles helps them continue their development, and removing the cover is usually the last stage, although there is no reason one couldn't remove the cover before switching to a cup without handles.
It's a good idea to have realistic expectations and not to expect too much from a child; frustration can result if parents expect a child to perform a task before they are physically able.
