Expert Q&A
Can you provide a brief explanation of an infant's "soft spot" and when it normally closes? Does that also apply to premature infants?
A newborn baby actually has two soft spots, an anterior fontanel and a posterior fontanel. Both soft spots aid in the baby's travel and exit from the birth canal. The posterior soft spot closes quickly and the normal frame of time for the anterior is between 9 to 18 months. Since babies develop at different rates, it is something to keep your pediatrician aware of and be sure to point it out if it hasn't closed by 2 years of age. There is no real difference in time frame for premature babies.
