Calm a Crying Baby
Expert Q&A
Question:
What is the best way to wean my 5-month-old from his pacifier?
Answer:
Unless using a pacifier is causing some sort of rash around your son's mouth or other ill health effect, you probably shouldn't worry about weaning him just yet. Five months old is still relatively young to worry about pacifier use. We find that most children tend to wean themselves between the ages of 9 and 12 months.

If you still think it's time to wean, you should keep the pacifier in the crib and allow your son to use it during his time in bed. The sucking is still very natural at this age and might help your baby sleep better. Then, when out during the day, you could limit the use of a pacifier to start the weaning process.

However, my suggestion is not to put any pressure on weaning from a pacifier just yet. It is normal to still use a pacifier at this age and probably isn't a problem at all.
