Calm a Crying Baby
Expert Q&A
Question:
I have a 6-week-old baby. When should I start putting her on a sleep schedule? I've heard that babies like a routine, so I was wondering if it's too early at this point. What is a typical sleep routine timeline? Bath, storytime and then lay the baby in bed? What about the last feeding (I'm breastfeeding)? Where should that fit in?
Answer:

Babies do love routines, but many new parents confuse "routine" with "schedule." At 6 weeks old a baby is much too young to adhere to a rigid schedule. Instead, try to work with your baby's natural rhythm and gently move her into a bedtime routine. This routine should begin an hour or so before your planned bedtime. Plan quiet, soothing activities in dim light. Include a bath, body rub, singing, rocking and nursing. When bedtime approaches you can help your baby fall asleep by keeping the room dark and quiet. If you maintain this rhythm you can help your little one learn how to fall asleep peacefully.
