I think at 2 months, you probably have the intuition to know how to play with your baby. All the studies show that a lot of physical affection, and particularly daily massage, helps myelinate the nerves of the brain, which speeds learning. The black-and-white toys that are pushed for babies to "increase their intelligence" have not been proven to do so. Their eyes go there because of the contrast. But their tastebuds are geared to sweetness because breastmilk is sweet; does it follow we should sugar all their food? I don't think so. I think the best way to play with your baby is by following her lead in what she's interested in. Offer her kitchen things like a wooden spoon and small pot or lid. Give her different types of cloth to play with. A type of mobile you can make has stuffed shapes and animals, and hang it close enough to her cradle, toward the bottom, where she can kick it to make it move. Little hand-made toy dolls that she can put in her mouth are always a hit. When she begins teething, peel a big, cold carrot and give it to her to play with; she'll put it in her mouth and it soothes the gums. Let her splash her hands in a bowl of warm water; put something in it that floats that she can put in her mouth. Take her out in nature and let her watch the dancing of leaves on trees and other natural things if you can; the rushing of a stream, a waterfall, flowers, little animals, etc. She doesn't need help in learning what comes naturally, and don't worry about timetables. Some of the "slowest" babies turn out to be brilliant adults. What is most important is that she feels safe, unconditionally loved and happy, that the world is a safe, loving and wonderful place to be. So strive to create an environment of happiness, joy, play, fun and love. Put on your favorite music and dance with her. Let her play with your face and fingers. Show her how to switch the lights on and off. She will be fascinated with all the normal things you have around the house. Let her "do her own thing" and don't worry about what she can and cannot do. Add some small toys that are safe to put in her mouth and that's all you need. Massaging her every day can help develop her brain and also increases the attachment process between you and makes you a more self-confident and intuitive mother. Most of all, enjoy this time every moment, and let your baby teach you how to be here now. It is the closest you can ever be to her, and before you know it she will be toddling away from you and this time cannot be retrieved. Enjoy!
