Calm a Crying Baby
Expert Q&A
Question:
How can I encourage my 14-month-old to walk? He seems to be happy enough just crawling around!
Answer:
Probably the simplest way is to stop transporting him. Eventually he'll want to go somewhere that will require walking or being carried. (Interestingly, this is how my son began walking. He wanted to go to the back door and sat on the floor crying. We were busy and couldn't go pick him up, so he got up and went on his own!)

Encouraging him to take just a step or two at a time may help, or holding him up while he "walks" between two upright surfaces might help.

Eventually, assuming he has the bone and muscle structure and tone to stand, he will start walking. This is a double-edged sword – crawling kids are easier to catch than walkers!
