Calm a Crying Baby
Expert Q&A
Question:
My 2 1/2-year-old daughter's father died recently. I am unable to console her. What do you advise?
Answer:
Of course you can seek counseling for her. You want to find therapists who do play therapy, as she is much too young for talking therapy. Children can express their feeling symbolically with toys. The Web site www.playtherapycentral.com may be able to give you a listing of therapists in your area.

Other therapists deal with trauma. A particular kind is eye movement and reprocessing therapy (EMDR). Check the Web site www.emdr.org. A good book about this kind of therapy is Through the Eyes of a Child by Robert H. Tinker and Sandra A. Wilson. You will still need to find someone who has expertise in doing EMDR with children. If you live in an isolated area with few options, a good therapist can give you ideas of how you can be more supportive with your daughter and almost take the role of a therapist.
