Calm a Crying Baby
Expert Q&A
Question:
My 9-month-old still uses both hands, and I have heard that they should already show a preference for one or the other. What does this mean? Should I encourage him to use his right hand if he has no preference?
Answer:
Some children will show a preference at 9 months, but many children don't manifest their final preference until 5-6 years of age. The only study done on 9-month-olds showed that 50 percent used both hands, and 25 percent each used right or left hands.
