"Birthmarks" are not caused by birth trauma, and will not harm your baby. They are caused by the same circumstances as any skin change in humans. The only difference between a mole on your skin and one on your baby's is that the baby's developed in the uterus.
There are many different types of birthmarks. They can be pink, red, blue, brown, yellow or black. The most common birthmarks are often called "stork bites" because the pink areas are found on the back of the neck or over the eyelids. While a serious disease can possibly cause a birthmark, this is VERY rare. Almost all birthmarks are benign and frequently will disappear over time, most often within the first year. They will almost never need treatment. If you are concerned, have a health care professional evaluate your child.
