Calm a Crying Baby
Expert Q&A
Question:
My baby will not open his mouth to take medicine. He's on liquid antibiotic often for ear infections. It's a battle. Any suggestions?
Answer:

I've been through this exact situation with my own child. I would suggest you use the dosing syringes provided by most pharmacies. You can often get those in the side of the cheek, even if the child is clenching his mouth shut. Always give the medication on the side of the mouth, it's harder to spit out than if the dose is given right in the center of the mouth. If that doesn't work, you can request chewables from your physician. Chewables are available for several antibiotics, and the child may find those acceptable. If your child absolutely refuses to take medications orally, the other option is injections of antibiotic given in the physician's office. This is often the easiest course to follow may only require one or two doses, but it is an injection and kids do not look forward to that. It may be best to talk with your child's physician and discuss the options.
