Calm a Crying Baby
Expert Q&A
Question:
I have 3-month-old twins, a boy and a girl. My girl has become very fussy the last few days. We have tried everything, and she is still not happy. We are starting to think she has colic. Is 3 months too late for a baby to develop colic, and is it possible for one baby to have colic and not the other?
Answer:
Your 3-month-old could be fussy for any number of reasons. I do think it is a little late to develop colic, although one twin can have colic when the other doesn't, especially when they are not identical twins.

Perhaps there has been too much noise and stimulation around her during the holidays. Try keeping her environment low-key for a few days – not having strangers handle her, not interrupting her sleep for "social events," keeping the noise level around her to a minimum, having her sleep/nap/feed away from family hubbub, etc. Do not feel you need to pick her up as soon as she fusses – sometimes less intervention is better!

If her fussiness continues despite the changes you have made to her environment, perhaps a check with your pediatrician would be in order to make sure she is gaining weight appropriately and has no signs of illness.
