Expert Q & A

Top : Child Development and Behavior : Milestones : Will my baby ever sleep through the night?

Question:

Will my baby ever sleep through the night?

Answer:

After the relief of delivering a healthy baby, the second concern of most parents is when will my baby sleep through the night. Some babies may sleep through the night as soon as they are born. Others may wake up two to three times a night. In the first four months it can be difficut to predict a schedule. As the brain develops babies begin to sleep longer (5-7 hours at night). As a rule of thumb, many pediatricians suggest trying to put your baby down to sleep every two to three hours. Too much wakefulness can cause overstimulation and make it harder for your baby to sleep. Each baby arrives with a unique personality and needs. As you begin to understand your baby's needs, sleep patterns will emerge.
