Introduction
Welcome!
Whew. I made it past the first year with twins without visiting the funny farm. Not that I wasn’t close to checking myself in at times. Tommy and Jake are a whirlwind except when they’re asleep, and even then Tommy’s left leg is kicking. But the strangest thing about this year is that it seemed to go so fast yet pass so slowly. I have to agree with Dickens: "It was the best of times. It was the worst of times!"
Sorry for not checking in sooner. We’ve had quite the sickly holiday season. Tommy and Jake both had ear infections, then colds and then the babies had the flu for a whole week. I was up to my elbows in puke and poop. Arg! I changed Jake’s and my outfit six times in one day. My enormous laundry pile looked like it had teeth. Don’t laugh. My life is not funny. (Everyone except me thinks my life is hilarious). And, of course, Lars and Max got sick too and joined in the puke-a-rama. But everyone is doing great now (knock on wood) and we all loved Christmas.
On the night before Christmas Lars and I asked Max: "Whose birthday is on Christmas?" expecting him to reply "Jesus." Instead he replied, "Tommy and Jake’s!" Hummm, note to self: religious training by osmosis isn’t working.
The babies liked the wrapping paper more than any Christmas or birthday gift, but the paper was shiny and covered with rainbows of curly ribbon, so who can blame them? Tommy and Jake stared at us, wide-eyed and laughing as friends and family sang "Happy Birthday" to them on Christmas day. I know, I know, lousy birthday date, but they did it to themselves. I was due January 20!
Anyway, my mom bought Tommy and Jake a bright green (picture Grinch-colored) dinosaur birthday cake. We let them dig right in with both hands (see pics) and they loved it. But yesterday Jake startled me with radioactive looking, bright green poop. A shocker for several puzzled moments until I remembered the Grinchly birthday cake. Yikes. For a minute I had worried I was mothering an alien.
The Doodlies (Lars started calling Jake and Tommy "the Doodle Bugs" and Max shortened it to "the Doodlies" so that’s what they’re called-I’m sure they’ll have issues with it later) are both scheduled for ear tube surgery tomorrow morning. (Short pause for a maternal anxiety attack.) I hate the very thought of the babies having surgery, but Jake has had a whopping nine ear infections since March and Tommy has had six. This has got to stop, and the tubes worked well with Max. So ...cross your fingers for us and tune in to the Toddlers Today diaries to keep current on our future adventures. The Doodlies and I are official Babies Today graduates.
Happy holidays everyone. Wishing you the best year ever in 2001!
