Introduction

11 months, 2 weeks +
Wow, it’s been ages since I’ve written! Things have been crazy here.
Daniel has started to talk a little. I was looking through a bunch of teddy bear images on the internet a couple of weeks ago, trying to find the perfect image to make his birthday cake from, and Daniel was lurking at my elbow watching the screen. He adores teddy bears, and couldn’t get enough of the pictures, and was getting quite excited – when suddenly be blurted out, “Teddy!” It was so cute. The next day (the day he turned 11 months) I picked him up out of his cot after his nap, he pointed to the framed cross-stitch pictures of teddies that I had made for him, and said, “Teddies,” clear as day! Since then he has added to his repertoire of words, occasionally saying “Bye” or “Bye-bye” and “da” or “ga” or “gaga” (all of which mean doggie). Clever boy!
A couple of Sundays ago we picked my mom up for church and she sat in the back seat next to D’s car seat. As we drove, Daniel started up a little game with her. He loves to play Peekaboo, it is his favourite game ever, but we were always the ones to hide and pop out – until now. Looking at his Nana, he slowly picked up the blanket on his lap, held it over his face, then dropped it with a big grin, initiating his own game of Peekaboo with her!
On my birthday I went to my friend Hannah’s place for a visit. Daniel loves to play with her two girls, Esther (2 days older than him) and Sariah (2) and I love to just hang out and chat with Hannah and not have to worry about him, since their place is so babyproof and D has plenty of new-to-him toys to play with and is perfectly content. Jenny also came over with James and the kids had so much fun together. Hannah and Jenny really spoilt me! Hannah did a lovely lunch and Jenny had baked me a cake with candles on. I really had a lovely birthday!
Recently we had guests from out of town. Grant’s best friend Dave is living in Virginia, and he and I had been chatting via MSN Messenger a few months ago and I asked him when he was planning on coming over for a visit. When he said he wanted to come over in October, I asked him to keep it a secret from Grant so we could make it a surprise. He and his girlfriend Kathryn booked their flights, I phoned Grant’s new boss (after Grant had only been working there a week!) and arranged leave for Grant, and we laid the plans. On the day that they were to arrive, Grant went to work as usual, my mom came around to watch D and I shot off to Manchester airport to fetch our guests. I brought them home, ran upstairs to phone Grant and pulled off one of the best performances of my life – I acted really ill and pretended I was crying and desperate for Grant to come home. I said I was throwing up all the time and D was sleeping and would wake up any minute and I couldn’t look after him in my state. I told him I couldn’t get hold of my mom and I wouldn’t be asking him to come home if I wasn’t desperate. He said he would be home as soon as he could. I raced downstairs and set up the video camera, aiming it at the lounge door, and Kathryn, my mom, Daniel and I stood to one side in the lounge, and Dave sat on a chair in the middle of the room. Grant arrived home shortly and opened the lounge door … and his surprised reaction was everything I had anticipated!! It was so fun and I’m so glad I got it all on video tape! He couldn’t believe that Dave was there and that he had the rest of the week off – and that I wasn’t actually sick!
Unfortunately, the rest of Dave and Kathryn’s visit didn’t go so well. They insisted that they had a good time, but I felt like it was a horrible holiday for them. Daniel was quite ill and up for most of every night, which disturbed their sleep, plus G and I were tired and not in the best of spirits during the day. Daniel was whiny and cranky and miserable as he was feeling so unwell, plus he hit another developmental growth spurt (making him insecure and crabby and clingy) at the same time AND he was also teething (two new teeth at the bottom, bringing his total to 8!)! Not our usual ray of sunshine! His cold turned nasty and he had to be on antibiotics – and G and I also caught the cold, mine turning into a sinus infection. And, as if that wasn’t enough, we were desperately house hunting as well as our landlord has sold the house we’re in! And of course the weather sucked – cold and rainy and stormy. But D and K insisted that they had fun. It was lovely to have them over here, and a pity that they couldn’t stay longer than 5 days.
Because Daniel had been on antibiotics, his tummy was a bit upset. I wanted to get some good bacteria back into his gut, so I bought some lovely organic live yoghurt. I figured that he’s almost a year, so I would try him with some dairy. He loved the yoghurt, but after 3 days of eating it he came out with a sore nappy rash, which has cleared up now that I’m not giving him yoghurt any more. Poor baby! Wheat allergy and now dairy too!! I am a little worried about him, since all he eats is fruit, vegetables, rice and oats – and very occasionally meat. I know that babies need fat in their diet for their developing brains, and I am just hoping he gets enough from my breast milk. He went off his food while ill, and has lost so much weight, it breaks my heart to see him. He looks like a famine victim! Just ribs and knees and hipbones, etc. I weighed him the other day and he was 7.6kg (about 16lb 7oz). He is coming up for his 1 year checkup and they’re going to think I’m starving him!
Sorry this entry is so disjointed and rushed – I don’t have much time today but wanted to get this one up and keep up to date. Thanks so much to all who posted on my TTM board!!!
Till next time,
Jen
