Lisa's Diary Entries

October 15, 2001

Ten months old already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's 8:14pm here in sunny Pennsylvania (OK, OK, it's dark out), and that means that Riley is asleep and I'm free to watch some TV and play around on the internet for a bit.

Riley has been doing the goofiest thing for the past few days. He scrunches his face up and squeezes his arms and fists, showing his muscles like a bodybuilder. We crack up whenever he does it, so now, of course, he does it all the time! Maybe we can dress him as a weightlifter for Halloween? HA! We have no idea where this came from, for anyone that knows my husband knows he's no bodybuilder, and there's never any WWF on in this house...Vincent thinks it was his pooping stance, and we've just reinforced it until it became it's own thing. :D I'll try to snap a picture of him doing it if I can.

Riley also took a few independent steps yesterday and today, but he isn't really "walking" yet, in the true sense of the word. But I'd be surprised now if it took him more than a week to get to it. My big boy! He's also been able to ut his stacking rings on for about a week now, and gets so excited about it that when I clap, he drops what he's doing and crawls up on my lap and hugs me. We have three different stacking rings, and he's experimenting putting the rings on different poles. The one, Fisher Price's sparkling symphony thing-a-ma-bob, has a yellow smiley face that goes on top, and he gets a bit frustrated with that one because he can't usually get the smiley face thing to stay on. Eventually he gets mad and throws it, and then moves to something else.

Which reminds me. This kid of mine's got quite the temper going. Isn't that supposed to wait until the terrible twos or something??? He actually throws himself on the floor face first and wails. Good grief. He's been doing this for a while, though I tried to pretend at first that he wasn't actually ACTIVELY having a tantrum. Help???

My picky eater is still eating bananas and oatmeal EVERY SINGLE MORNING, followed by yogurt and fruit for lunch. We keep trying different foods, but he's not into it. He eats some things (he apparantly loves meatloaf - who knew?) but usually just chews and then spits stuff out. He enjoys sticking the food in his mouth though, so that's something. But watch out! If you try to give him even a slight variation on the bananas (bananas and blueberries, for instance) with his oatmeal (God forbid you give him peaches or pears instead) he has a fit and screams and cries and won't eat anything, even if you lug yourself into the kitchen and get a blasted jar of bananas and try to make amends. Done. Too late. It's maddening if you let it bother you, so instead, I just give hime the same things over and over again, hoping he'll get sick of it eventually. This from the girl whose eaten Cheerios and skim milk every weekday morning for something like ten years!!! Janet at the daycare tried to encourage me to bring him different food, for about two days, and then she concurred - give him what he wants. So bananas and oatmeal it is.

My friend friend Mo and her boyfriend stopped over on Sunday from NYC - turns out her boyfriend's family lives in my town (all 3/4 of a square mile that it is), and they were here for a party or something. Her boyfriend's sister-in-law was actually able to direct them to our house, though I still haven't figured out how they knew which house it was! I don't actually know them. Freaky, huh? But quaint. THat's why we like it here, I guess.

My great-grandfather died last week. He was 98 years old, and I never once took Riley to meet him. He was sort of not the nicest guy (God strike me down I'm sorry but I need to be honest), and my biggest memories of him are of him making my grandmother cry, week after week. But I still feel terrible that Riley had a great-great grandfather and he never met him (unless you want to count the funeral, but I don't think that technically it counts). Mostly I hope that my family can survive losing it's patriarch.

Finally, we have another ultrasound on Wednesday, and if all goes well, we get to move on to our regular ob-gyn. Also, I'll finally feel OK to tell my new boss that I'm pregnant!! I just really hope she doesn't freak out, so cross your fingers for me...I'll be in my new job for seven months before I leave for maternity leave, leaving my boss to do my job and hers until I get back. Yes, I think she's going to freak out. :D

That's all for this long-winded soul tonight. Still no Halloween costume for Riley, but we're working on it. I can't seem to find the perfect costume...I just love Halloween and I want it to be special, but pretty soon, there won't be any costumes left!

If you've read this far, make a point to say "hi" or something so I can personally congratulate you for your endurance, LOL. Have a great week!
