Lisa's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

February 3, 2002

Well, it's been quite a while since my last entry, so if nothing else, you'll know that the fast pace of life in the "S" household hasn't slowed a bit. But Allie's being able to handle two kids and write more frequently in her diary than I do has inspired me to get off my (quite large now) rumpus and write.

Speaking of girth, mine continues to grow exponentially. We found out we're having a girl, whom we think we are going to name Isabella Rose, "Bella" for short. So Riley's going to have a baby sister to abuse, God help her. I try to explain the whole sibling thing to him, but of course, he shows no sign of understanding that enormous changes await him. He will be staying in the same room, however, and I even think we'll borrow a crib for Bella until he's ready to switch to a big boy bed, but time will tell on that one. We're finishing the basement in order to make room for her in our guestroom/office, but DH is doing that mostly on his own so it's taking a while. We had it waterproofed last DEcember, and he's in the process of getting ready to frame the walls.

Riley is a full fledged toddler now, babbling up a storm and even announcing when he's hungry by saying "ba-um", his attempt at "bottle." Everything is "ba-um", however, from milk in a cup, to the bottle he takes at night & in the morning, to pancakes and pasta and everything in between. Too cute. Riley is also dancing (he seems like he's trying to tap dance by stomping his feet and swaying - adorable!) and making animal sounds. If you ask him what the sheep says, he can usually tell you "baa baa," and he'll do the same for the cow, though that's more of a "booo" than a "mooo"...he can also do the snake ("ssssss") and the doggie ("woof woof" - this one he does with fervor, shaking his head up and down). But mostly he likes the sheep sound and the cow's. He won't seem to venture out and attempt the duck and the pig, despite my efforts.

But with toddlerhood comes tantrums, which he also has. I've tried putting him in time out (am I crazy??) mostly to make me feel better when he purposefully swats me in the face. Any advice on this topic would be greatly appreciated - mostly I try to ignore him when he acts out, if possible, even leaving the room all together, which he hates. And then I'm there trying to explain to a thirteen month old that hitting is wrong and mommy still loves him but she gets upset when he tries to hurt people on purpose...insanity is surely only a few steps away.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that we DID have Riley's birthday party, rescheduled for January 6th, and of course....he was sick! So he wanted to be held the whole time and didn't touch the Elmo birthday cake that we made for him. And no, I didn't know that there was an Elmo mold...DH and I cut cake to make an Elmo shape, which is a nightmare to try and frost but it looked cute. He ended up having his mini Elmo smash cake all alone the next night, with just Mommy & Daddy to cheer him on. But he enjoyed the gifts (so many toys!!) and the company, and overall it was a success, even if it did sleet and rain.

Which remind me to mention one last thing. The doctor who advised us to cancel his party in December, due to RSV, saw him again about two weeks ago because his daycare pointed out that he had white blisters in the back of his tongue. I take him to the doc, and she says....."Oh, he has RSV." So I argue with her, because of course, he had RSV before, and he isn't even coughing. She disregards the blisters ("some kids get that when they get sick") and tried to give him Albuterol, which I refuse, since the last time he had it he wouldn't take a drop and they took him off.

Well get this...about 3-4 days later, I take off my socks, and find blisters all over my feet. Why, you ask??? Because Riley had stomatisis of hand-foot-and-mouth disease, NOT RSV, and because the wise old doc didn't see fit to advise me to NOT share my water glass with him because he was VERY contagious, I ended up with hand-foot-and-mouth. Is that disgusting or what? Luckily, I didn't get obvious blisters on my hands, or any on my face, or I would have taken sick time that I needed for maternity leave just because of my own humiliation. So, I'm looking for a new doctor.

That about wraps us up to now. It's Superbowl Sunday, and we're having our traditional Superbowl Muffuletta (yum!). The Eagles lost, so I'm rooting for the Patriots (I went to college in New England)...here's to hoping one of us ends up ten million dollars richer by the end of the night, God knows we could use it. ;)

Love,

Lisa, Vincent, Riley & Bella(??)
