Helen W's Diary Entries

January 1, 2001

*SIGH*..another week over! My baby is 31 weeks old. 7 months. Too old too quickly, and still leaping, and bounding and hurtling away from babyhood. In one week we have put away the infant carseat and put him in a big boy's seat, packed away the little clip on high-chair and set up the big boys one. Bought his first pair of shoes and stopped having to help him go to sleep. WHERE IS MY TINY BABY??

He has been ill yet again and we have spent another 4 hours at the hospital. This time the diagnosis was pharyngitis, an infection in his throat. a full night of heartbreaking, exhausting, frustrating screaming amd at 5.30 am we set off for the hospital, where, as usual he cheered up and we were met with the usual "he's alright, look at him, far too smiley, cheerful, well looking to be ill" until they take his temp.."Oh Oh this baby has a fever", tylenol, strip him off and wait for him to cool down etc.!! actually there was one moment that made me smile...after nearly 4 hours of waiting, tests, and more waiting..Seth gave in and fell asleep and of course that had to be the very moment the nurse felt it time to recheck his temp.So there he was, fast asleep, flat on his back, legs akimbo with a bottle hanging out of his mouth and a thermometer stuck up his bum!! Poor little boy ( sorry Seth, it had to be told!!! and it could be worse if we'd had a camera!!) So, more anti biotics, and the usual instructions for tylenol etc.

SHOES!! real big boy stuff this, I have to say that I really hate putting shoes on my babies until they can walk, it just seems so restrictive and unnecessary, but this baby isn't waiting and so it was shoe time, but we found the most glorious soft leather shoes that feel like slippers but mean he can walk when he's outside and he just loves them. As soon as we put the shoes on he picks up his feet to look at them and he's off....he is getting better and better at walking and I'm sure it won't be long before he is balanced enough to go it alone.he really shows no interest in crawling and still gets mad on his tummy, perhaps he won't bother and will go straight to walking.

The highchair. well, th eclip on chair had to go, Seth spent more time teasing Taz the dog than doing anything else, so he is in the big boy's chair and life is so much easier. he is really eating beautifully, even having sandwiches for lunch! and miracle of miracles has decided that milk isn't such a bad thing after all, so id now drinking some formula as well, thank goodness. At meal times he has decided that he wants water, from one of our cups and nothing else will do, so he has a drink of water ( and the glass is DISGUSTING by the time he has finished, full of food and spit back!!UGH!). Very grown up indeed.

Sleeping. well, no more back patting for us, seth is so exhausted form all his activities that twice in the day and at bedtime, we just put him in his crib, say "night night" and he goes to sleep, absolute heaven!
at bedtime, I feed him his bottle and while I am cuddling him, I stoke his head and eyebrows until he goes to sleep, this evening, was so tired after no sleep last night and a full day today, that I cuddled him and was zoned out! Not really concentrating at all, until I looked down and he was STROKING HIS OWN HEAD! It was quite the sweetest thing, his little hand stroking all over his head and down the side of his face, I gave him 'snuggly' and took over 'stroking duty' and he was asleep in seconds, too splendid a moment! And on that note, short though this might be, I am ready to join him and have some well earned sleep myself! Love to all of you and yours for another week, Helen.
