Rena's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

February 18, 2001

Well, we're still here! In limbo as we wait to transition to Toddlers Today, so I'm going to post a short entry about Jeremiah's 1 year checkup.

The checkup really threw me for a loop. At his 6 month checkup Jeremiah was 27" and 17.7 lbs, which put him in the 75% percentile. Now at a year, he was 28.5" and 20.2 lbs, which dropped him to 10%. The dr. seemed pretty concerned about the slip, and measured him three times just to make sure. She made some comment about "ordering some tests" if he didn't *improve* by 18 months, so I said "Whoa, wait a minute, what kind of tests are you talking about?" She replied "thyroid" to make sure he was growing properly. Then she recommended that I give him a nutritional supplement such as Pediasure or Boost twice a day. I was getting more than a bit ticked at this point. Why wasn't she looking at my happy, healthy boy who's hitting all his milestones early or on target instead of a bunch of numbers on a growth chart which are based on formula-fed babies from my understanding? Breastfed babies do tend to slow their growth in the second six months, so why didn't she take that into account? Also, Matt at 5'10" is the tallest of his brothers who range from 5'6" to 5'10" so I don't think we're producing a basketball team here! So I went into this checkup expecting a whole lot better than I got, that's for sure! I just didn't know how to process all of this information without getting all upset and bewildered. Perhaps he's just settling into his own place on the growth charts? Rebecca was always a peanut in the weight dept. but she steadfastly remained at the same percentile throughout so the dr. never fussed about it. Hmmm...

Anyhow, onto bigger and better things...Jeremiah has become extremely vocal, gesturing like crazy when he sees something he wants, and emitting a steady stream of vocalese that eludes me for the moment, but he is definitely *talking*! I'm just in need of an interpretor LOL! And of course he always know where the candy/sweets are...gee, who does he take after on that...?

He's walking everywhere and relishing his newfound independence. He is still resisting shoes, my shoeless wonder, and takes every opportunity to snatch off his socks in a defiant gesture. He has also founf my bellybutton and his own, and savors lifting my shirt in search of that funny looking little hole to explore.

Last weekend Matt and I went away for the first time without the kids (to Laughlin, NV), so I left Jeremiah with my MIL. The only reservation I had about leaving him was the nursing at night- her reply to that was "Oh, this will take care of that!" meaning that he'd be "cured" of nursing while I was gone and "not around to bug him" When I'd call to check in, she'd inform me that he'd slept fine both nights, just needed a pat or two on the back and he'd go right back to sleep. When we got back and he resumed nursing, she clucked her tongue at me and went on about that 5 year old boy who was still nursing, trying to make a lame case against extended nursing. Jeremiah's only a year old, for crying out loud!

Anyhow, that's our short version update, hoping to see you all over at TT soon!

Love, Rena and Jeremiah
