Sarah's Diary Entries

December 21, 2003

A year ago today was my due date! I truly can’t believe how sad I am about Hannah turning one. She is such a toddler now and really doesn’t look like a baby much at all anymore. It is unreal to watch her walking around the house and talking! I really miss that newborn stage and also being pregnant, but we do plan to wait a few years before having another. I also turned her car seat around and she thinks she is just hot stuff. She points at me and is very happy not to have to use her little mirror to see me. Her one year visit is on Tuesday and I’m very curious to see how much she weighs. I do believe we’ve broken 20lbs finally, as we went to the ped this week for her to get some yeast infection medicine and she weighed in at a whopping 20lbs 6ozs with clothes and shoes on.

Parties
Hannah’s birthday parties both went great. My dad held the first one for her last Saturday and it was small and cozy. They followed what I was doing for her other party and also had a princess theme. Hannah was all smiles and loved the cake. The following day the party at our house was much bigger and more hectic, but still fun. We had tons of food and lots of people! Hannah was in a good mood again, which of course makes the day for us! Some of her favorite presents are her little people farm, bus, and baby zoo animals, and Hokey Pokey Elmo, Get Up and Bounce Tigger, and her Leap Frog Activity Table. She got lots of great stuff! I posted some pictures on her website, but haven’t gotten all the ones from our house developed yet.

Hannah’s Noggin
Hannah has been out of her helmet now almost a month! I’m definitely used to it now, though Hannah still is adjusting. Right now she has a little bruise on her forehead because she still sometimes forgets she has one! I really worry about her head regressing, especially where it isn’t completely round to begin with. I guess my saving grace is that the only time she is on it is in the car seat because she mostly sleeps on her belly. There is a part of me that frequently thinks she should have a third band because she still does have time, but Cranial Technologies didn’t believe it would help really in the areas she needs correction in. It’s hard to describe, but her overall head shape kind of slopes to the left. If you look at it from the top it looks completely round, but if she tilts it slightly forward you can still see the asymmetry at the top. It is basically in an area that would be above the band, as it is the very top of her head. If you look at the link I have on my TTM board of her One Year/Christmas pictures you can see what I’m talking about. All I can do is hope it will round out on its own a little more. I do also realize that it isn’t something your everyday person would notice at this point. From having a plagio baby, I guess I am automatically inducted into the “plagio police” task force. I can spot a flat headed/misshapen headed baby a mile away and also give you a very good opinion on whether or not the baby would benefit from helmet therapy. It blows my mind that a year ago I had never even heard of plagiocephaly and now I’m somewhat of a self proclaimed plagio expert. Have you ever seen “Baby Neptune” from the “Baby Einstein” series? If you have, pay attention to the babies in the tub—one is a classic brachy case (flat back, rather than on one side like Hannah’s). Anyway, Cranial Technologies takes very professional looking progress pictures during treatment and I have scanned them and will post them on my TTM board. Please tell me what you think.

The Terrible Two’s Already!
Hannah has been rearing her not so fun and carefree side a bit more than I would like these days! She absolutely downright refuses to nap in her crib. She screamed for over an hour yesterday in her crib before I finally gave up. She was acting very tired and grouchy so she really did need it, but just wouldn’t. Finally we had to go out in the afternoon and she took a very short nap in the car. All day today she slept 45 mins, also in the car. She is throwing some major tantrums too. If she wasn’t my own child, she’d be the one of those I’d say was being a brat sometimes. It’s very silly stuff. For example, we were out to eat the other night and Hannah was having her standard chicken nuggets. The kids meal also came with cheese sticks (basically pizza crust with cheese inside), which I also knew she’d like. I cut her up some of that too and put it with her chicken. It was quite obvious that she liked those way better than the chicken and decided to pick them all out. Well, heaven forbid, she accidentally put a piece of chicken in her mouth. She proceeded to kick her feet, flail her arms, arch her back, and finally whip her head back and scream. Of course she just had to hit her head on the back of the wooden high chair when she did that and scream even louder. All over a bite of chicken. That is just one of the many examples. I try to ignore her the best I can so as not to give her attention for it, but man oh man! Help!

Happy Holidays!
I hope everyone has wonderful holidays! We’re celebrating Christmas with all the sides of the family drawn out from Christmas Eve through the Saturday after. I’m looking forward to it and have to keep correcting myself telling Hannah it’s her first Christmas. We came home from the hospital last Christmas, so I don’t really feel like we had one! On New Years day we’re heading up to Bretton Woods for a few days of skiing. Much of the family won’t be skiing this year though like usual. My cousin and I will be hanging with Hannah and the twins most of the time, my stepfather is having knee surgery in a couple weeks, my aunt had some surgery over the summer, my mom says she’s gotten too fat, etc, etc. We’ll all have a great time regardless of what we do. We’ve got some great pictures from last year with the three girls in their car seats (all of a couple months old!) at the ski lodge with the mountains in the background. I hope you all have happy and HEALTHY holidays! No flu!

TTM
-Tell me what you think of Hannah’s head progress! I’d love some comments/questions.
-When did your child get his/her first molar? I just noticed that Hannah already has one and I didn’t think that was supposed to happen yet!
-When did your little one graduate from two naps to one? What time did this nap usually start?
-Any advice on the tantrum throwing? Eeek!

Thanks for Reading,
Sarah & Hannah
