Introduction

November 11, 2002

Hello everyone. I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying fall. I love the Christmas season but it’s hard to believe how quickly the store displays change from Halloween to Christmas (or change even before Halloween) and how soon we get bombarded with every store flyer to entice us to buy gifts. Mind you, I’m the greatest sucker. I love giving gifts especially home made gifts so I’m going all out, trying to get everything done. It’s great fun though and I’m hoping to have a festive look in our home throughout December this year. I will have to go shopping for non-breakable Christmas ornaments soon. J

What’s new in Erika’s life??? She’s changing so much. Erika seems to have recovered from all her little bugs and is going on learning new things every day.

Walking

As proud parents, we’re counting as yesterday (November 10th) to be the day she took her first steps. They were really unsteady but several times during the day, she took some steps before she either fell or before she managed to grab a hold of something. It can only be a matter of weeks now before she turns into a real walker. We’re pretty excited.

Talking

Do we ever have a talkative, social little chatterbox. She is working on real words and real conversations but we really have no clue what her conversations are all about. For words, she has Daddy and Ki-Ka (Kitty Cat) well under control. She is also starting to say “HI” when we great her and in her mind her every response to us telling her something is “Ya” and she nods her head. For the social aspect, she is so much fun to watch. She isn’t afraid of people she doesn’t know and tries to make eye contact with people (for example, when we’re in a restaurant or the grocery store or church). She works hard until she gets someone to acknowledge her and interact with her. It’s quite fun to watch.

Halloween

Halloween will go in to the memory books as the day the car broke down outside of daycare. Luckily I got to daycare and had already picked up Erika. I called DH first when I had noticed the car had died. Then I called the tow truck service. I thought it was more than the battery because of some other issues we were going to have looked at and had already made an appointment for. Erika and I went back into the warmth of the daycare and played while we waited for DH and the tow truck. The tow truck driver came and he ended up fixing some lose connection and then jump started my car. It started and he left. He told me not to turn off my car. We decided to leave Erika with DH in his car just in case I broke down again. We got into our respective cars and I turned my headlights on because by now it was dark. As soon as I turned the lights on, the car stalled out again. So then DH tried to jump start me again and he had no luck with his car. So we called the tow truck company again and they sent someone else out. We waited patiently in Evan’s car because by now the daycare was closed and it was cold. The next guy showed up and started my car and did all kinds of tests and made me drive around the parking lot. He assured me that I would be fine. We proceeded to leave. I went ahead of DH. Unfortunately, rush hour hadn’t died down yet. As we were on the on-ramp to the highway and bridge that I have to cross every day my car felt funny and I thought I was losing power. I was stalling out again………… I called DH on the cell phone and he was only 15 cars behind me. He pulled over, we abandoned my car grabbed McDonalds on the way home and went home from where he called the two truck guys again and had them tow my car to the dealer to get it fixed the next morning. I can’t believe how patient Erika was through all of this. We got home late and Halloween was basically over. I still stuck Erika in her little giraffe costume and went over to two of the neighbours and then we went home and put our feet up. It was a long Halloween and because we missed all of the trick or treaters, we’re still eating chocolate today.

I have some pictures on our web site. They are from Erika’s first birthday and some of you have definitely seen them but here is the link: http://members.shaw.ca/uliross. I will probably update these in the next few days as I have some cool new shots of her that look really neat and we’re picking up her Christmas portraits later this week. Erika is also getting class pictures done at daycare tomorrow. I’m so excited. J

I need to relieve DH now. He’s been playing with Erika all while I cleaned bathrooms and typed this entry.

Oh, and before I forget........ Jenny, good luck and a happy, healthy and safe delivery of your new baby girl!!!!

Have a great week.

Uli & Erika
