Tips on Everything from Bathing to Twin-proofing

At Home with TwinsNo matter how well you planned to be sure you had plenty of help when your twins were born, that dreaded day is going to come – the day you're finally alone with two babies. The thought of bathing two infants is daunting in itself. It won't get any easier when there are two toddlers running in different directions. It's enough to turn your hair gray.

But there's no need to reach for the Clairol just yet. Lots of moms have been there, done that, and there are plenty of tips and tricks for how to safely deal with two when you're alone with your twin babies and toddlers. And yes, you can still actually get something accomplished.

The old expression "two heads are better than one" goes double when you have two curious toddlers.

Bathing Two Babies
In most situations, handling twin infants is easier at home. You generally have a lot more flexibility in being able to deal with two at a time. The one big potential for an accident is at bath time. It may be tempting to just put them both in the tub or the sink, but Susan Heim, a mother of twins and author of It's Twins: Parent-to-Parent Advice from Infancy Through Adolescence (Hampton Roads Pub., 2007), says you should never plan to bathe two babies at the same time if you're by yourself. "It's hard enough to keep both hands on one wet and slippery newborn," Heim says. "It's impossible with two."

Instead, bring all your supplies into the bathroom – towels, washcloths, baby soap, pajamas, etc. – before you begin the bath. Set one baby close by in a bouncy chair. When you've finished bathing the first baby, dry her off, dress her (so she doesn't get cold), put her in a bouncy chair and bathe the other baby. Be sure to test the water again before putting in the second baby. If it has cooled off too much, add a little warm water first.
