Switching Baby to Organic
The New Organic Baby Formulas
By Debora Geary
For parents who have already made the switch to some organic foods, the choice of an organic baby formula over a regular formula might be a no-brainer. However, for those who have not yet joined the organic movement, the choice might be less clear. So what are the advantages of an organic baby formula?
Organic baby formulas are made with certified organic ingredients, and the makers conform to a national government (USDA) certification standard.
For most parents, the biggest benefit of organic formula is for the milk ingredients. Dairy-based baby formula contains both cow's milk and lactose (part of milk). Organic milk products are produced by cows that have not been fed with pesticide-sprayed feeds or injected with growth hormones to increase their milk production. Given the growing concern over the use of hormones and antibiotics in regular milk, many parents feel more comfortable choosing organic, especially in their baby's early years.
According to Horizon Organic, its baby formula is certified organic in accordance with USDA organic standards and meets all FDA requirements for complete infant nutrition. "Our philosophy centers on the fact that you don't need growth hormones, antibiotics or dangerous pesticides to make good, healthy products that consumers can trust," says Gwen Scherer, director of marketing for Horizon Organic. "Since all milk-based formulas are made from milk bi-products, it was a natural extension for Horizon Organic. Our organic milk serves as the starting point for our infant formula." Horizon Organic is marketing this formula explicitly for the first 12 months of a baby's life.
Nature's One produces two different kinds of organic baby formula: a dairy-based and a soy-based product. Nature's One, however, has taken a different approach to marketing their formulas. While their products also meet FDA nutritional standards for infant formulas, Nature's One promotes Baby's Own as a toddler
