Tried-and-true Teething Remedies

Parent-tested Ways to Comfort Teething Babies

tried-and-true teething remediesA girl was brought to Dr. Thomas Rennaker, a dentist in Los Angeles, Calif., because she had pain in her mouth. The diagnosis? Teething. The mom was pleased that she didn't have a more serious problem.

Obviously the pain was bad enough to want to do something about it. The pain can be stressful for Baby. But a cranky, teething baby can cause stress for Mom, Dad and siblings as well. Here are some tried-and-true teething remedies that have worked for other parents, what the experts think about these remedies and what the experts themselves recommend.

Many babies increase their need to nurse during periods of teething, for emotional and physical comfort.

Tried-and-true Teething Tips
Karri Flatia is a work-at-home mom in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, with two little boys, both of whom have had teething struggles that inevitably interrupted their sleep. She's found that the sleepless nights generally occur at the rate of one bad night per tooth. "The best way to cope with teething, for me, as a breastfeeding mom, was always ibuprofen combined with nursing the little fellow back to sleep," she says. "If nursing is not available to you, then snuggles and stories are a great distraction while the painkiller kicks in and that usually takes about 20 minutes to happen."

Nursing, or the "magic boobie" was a remedy mentioned by a few other moms, including Debbie Schwartzberg Levy of Pittsburgh, Pa. "If you are nursing, the boobie fixes everything," she says. "My kids would stay there forever to comfort themselves."

I will suggest Amber Teething necklaces. They've been super. It might be too early to tell, but both of the kids have been way less irritable today. I haven't given them any tylenol for teething pain, but they seem happy and pain free with the necklaces. Plus, the necklaces are adorable. I took the kids strolling in the mall today and got many compliments.

Never thought to give my baby a frozen bagel for teething relief. Great idea! I'm not big on my baby chewing on plastic anymore because of all the chemical scares.
