Breastfeeding Multiples

Yes, It's Possible!

Pages:  1  2

Successful breastfeeding of twins, triplets or more is possible and highly rewarding.

Research certainly confirms that breast milk is the ideal food for babies because it contains the nutrients needed for the first four to six months of life. Breast milk also contains substances that help protect babies from many illnesses.

However, breastfeeding multiples requires a special commitment on the part of the mother. To produce milk for two or more babies, a new mom first needs to tend to her own health. Eat properly, drink plenty of fluids and get lots of rest. In fact, nutritionists recommend that a mother breastfeeding twins consume at least 3,000 calories each day. The diet needs to include high-protein foods and at least a quart of milk. Extra help at home may be necessary for the first few weeks while a feeding routine is established.

A Little Planning

Twins can be breastfed together or one-on-one. Feeding triplets or more takes more planning. Above all, it is important to do whatever works for you and your babies. A feeding chart can be helpful especially during the first few weeks.

This is a helpful article. As a mother of twins, I can tell you that it wasn't easy but it is possible, especially with additional support as mentioned in the article. Lisa
