Tips to Keep Exercise Rooms Safe for Families with Babies and Toddlers

Fitness Equipment SafetyChildproofing is always high on a new parent's list of priorities, but an area of the house that many may overlook was recently brought into the spotlight after the death of Mike Tyson's daughter, Exodus. The 4-year-old was strangled by a cord that connected to the family's treadmill. Authorities believe the child was playing on the machine.

More than 25,000 children suffer injuries due to fitness equipment each year, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The ever-popular treadmill tops the list, along with stationary bikes and stair-climbers – and most injuries involve the power cord.

Whether mechanical or not, most fitness equipment poses some risk.

The Tyson accident should "serve as a reminder that no matter how much parents try to protect their children, accidents aren't 100 percent preventable," says Dr. Lara Zibners, a physician in New York and London who holds board certifications in both pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine, as well as the author of If Your Kid Eats This Book, Everything Will Still Be Okay (Wellness Central, 2009). "Childproofing only deters children from getting into trouble; it's not a guarantee."

It's not a guarantee, but combined with adult supervision, childproofing is a good place to start.

We just have a treadmill and stationary bike behind the couch. Never gave much thought to it (it's not in an enclosed room). I have three kids and a stepdaughter that's 3, so we're going to make some changes. Love Dr Cohen's comment about not letting them play with other appliances, so why are we so relaxed about fitness gear.

The Mike Tyson accident broke my heart. I honestly don't even think about my fitness room that much. I'm probably like alot of women who made one then rarely used it. But that doens't mean my 3-year-old won't wander in there and get hurt. Good tips here.

I have seen so many articles on the Mike Tyson tragedy. All with the gossipy, celebrity news feel. It was nice to see some actual helpful tips and advice for parents who want more than the gossip. I have never even thought of unplugging my workout machines, or moving the pin on the weights. My husband and I will now spend part of the day Saturday making sure our workout space is child proofed. And my thoughts and sympathies to the Tyson family on their loss.
