Parents Share Memorable Moments and Unique Milestones

Firsts for BabyFrom the moment you bring the baby home, all of your lives are filled with firsts. First step. First word. First tooth. First smile. First kiss. The digital camera is always within reach. The video camera is on stand-by. Fingers itch to make the newest entry into the parenting blog so that friends and strangers can follow the latest goings-on.

There are so many memories to make, so many moments to capture. It pains us to think that we might miss one, or lose one in the hazy mists of our fatigued memory. However, some milestones in the life of a parent and child move beyond photo ops and become genuine learning opportunities, celebrated not just because they happened but because of what they taught us.

From the moment you bring the baby home, all of your lives are filled with firsts.

Making (Unique) Memories
For the Rubin family of Santa Fe, N.M., enough was enough. Maybe they were exhausted after five and a half years. Maybe they were overwhelmed by sheer numbers. At any rate, they were finished with the whole thing. After purchasing, changing and disposing of thousands of diapers for their three children, Shirley and James Rubin decided that the time had finally come to quit cold turkey. They bought one more box, and then made dramatic plans to celebrate.

"My twin boys are now 3, and we had to cut them off, both for their sake and for our sanity," Rubin says. "I purchased what I decided was our last box and decided that we would burn the last two, one diaper for each twin."
