Diaphragms

Is It the Right Choice for You?

By Shel Franco

For women like Marnie Holmes of Sydney, Australia, the diaphragm is the right choice. "I am in a high risk group [with] very poor circulation, so the Pill was out," Holmes says. "[Besides,] I can't stand taking tablets and I didn't want to mess around with my body chemistry."

According to information made available by Planned Parenthood, because the diaphragm does not introduce hormones into your body, it is safe for use if you breastfeed or are sensitive to hormonal changes. It may also help protect you from certain sexually transmitted infections, pelvic inflammatory disease and cervical cancer.

Diaphragms are effective, portable and usually undetectable. They can be inserted early enough not to interrupt romantic encounters. And unlike the pill, they do not cause any hormonal changes and have no lasting effects on the body.

"After my son was born, I knew we'd want another child within a few years, so it just seemed like the most logical choice to use the most non-invasive method," says Hannah Hayes of Chicago, Ill.
