Returning After Maternity Leave

Some women know from the very beginning that they will return to work and look forward to finding the right balance between work and home. Mary Helen Organ, a legal secretary from Fuquay-Varina, N.C., found maternity leave difficult and missed the adult interaction she enjoyed at work. "Maternity leave was hard," she says. "It was not what I thought it would be. I didn't know anything about babies, and I was very inexperienced. Also, I missed my friends and social life at work." Organ and her husband are happy with their decision for her to return to work after four months, and say they would do it again.

Others find attaining that balance more difficult. Upon returning to work after the adoption of her first child, "both work and home seemed more hectic," says Davis. "Professionally, I tried to make sure I got all my work done within normal working hours because I didn't want to have to stay late. I worked late a lot less, but was still trying to accomplish the same amount of work. At home, I was still trying to squeeze in everything I could with my daughter in the evenings and on the weekends to make up for the time I missed during the day."

Many women say that although they dreaded returning to work as their time at home grew shorter, and the first few months back at work were difficult because of the lifestyle adjustment that is required when a baby comes along, they are now happy with their family situations. "I really tried not to think about returning [to work], but the last week I was off, I was dreading it," says Amy Byers, a marketing director and mother of one from Murfreesboro, Tenn.
