Handling "Multiple" Questions with Grace

By Amy Carey

Pages:  1  2  3

Curious, But Annoying
Toni Pearson of Las Vegas, Nev., says she is most often asked if raising twins is difficult. "I simply say, 'No, it's not hard, and I love it!'," she says. "People look at me like I am crazy, but maybe they won't ask the next parent they see with twins."

She adds that there's another benefit to replying that you love having twins and are enjoying it: "Eventually, you will start believing it yourself!" she says, laughing.

Beyond just being annoying, though, the comments can make the shortest jaunt to the grocery store a daylong event. Some moms have to stop in every aisle of the grocery store to listen to passersby say everything from, "How sweet!" to "How do you do it?"

At some point, especially if your babies are fussing, older children are impatient or you have an appointment to keep, you need to plow through the crowd and move on. "I know people are curious and sometimes the attention is flattering ... but I don't like that people expect me to stand there for half an hour answering questions that are personal in front of the whole crowd of people who have gathered," says Jeanie Kesselring, a mother of two sets of twins in Union City, Pa.

In a perfect world, you might smile politely and let the interested individual know that now is not a good time to talk. Kesselring will occasionally tell a "little white lie" – one of her children has to use the bathroom – which will usually clear the way for her and her children.
