Coping with Colic

How to Help Your Baby – and Yourself

By Lisa Hurt Kozarovich

Tips to soothe your baby:
  • Use white noise, like that from a fan or washer-dryer.
  • Carry Baby in a front sling or backpack.
  • Massage Baby's belly or feet.
  • Experiment with positions your baby likes; one that seems to work for many babies is to put him or her flat on your lap or over your arm and rub his back.
  • Go for a walk or a car ride.
  • Try to calm your own anxiety, which your baby will pick up on.
  • Take a bath together.
  • Babies like motion, so put him or her in a swing, bouncy chair or something similar.
  • Remember that while dark, quiet environments soothe some babies with colic, others are calmed by bright lights and action and could benefit from a trip to the mall.
