One of the moms we've taught told me that her son hated to be laid down on his back as a baby. When she started telling him and showing him that she was laying him down for a diaper change using the signs 'diaper' and 'change,' he would calm down and seem OK with the activity."

4. Try a Different Approach

If your baby puts up a fight at changing time, he might be uncomfortable lying on his back.

"When my daughter went through this phase, I started putting her on her tummy to change her diaper and it solved our dilemma," says Chicke Fitzgerald, a mom from Tampa, Fla. "She really just didn't like being on her back, so turning her over and giving her a toy worked well, and wiping the messier part of the diaper change was actually much easier!"

5. Ensure Safety

A wiggly baby on a raised changing table can be tricky, which is why parents must be conscious of safety at changing time. A baby should never be left on a changing table surface unattended, so make sure you have everything you will need within reach. If your baby tries to squirm away while you're working on the diaper, use the strap to help restrain him. But don't mistake the strap as a substitute for your presence. The strap doesn't ensure Baby's safety enough to leave him alone on the table.

Diaper changes can be challenging, and as your baby grows and develops, changing time might get trickier. When you use these tips for keeping baby busy and happy, diaper changes can be stress free and even fun!
