The Germs of Summer

Tips for Keeping Baby Happy and Healthy During the Warm Months

If your summer travels include staying in hotels, there are a few "hot spots" parents should be particularly mindful of when pulling out the disinfecting wipes or spray. Dr. Sears points to a study conducted by investigators from the University of Virginia and Reckitt-Benckiser, the world's No. 1 household cleaning company (excluding laundry) and the makers of Lysol™. In the study, investigators found that adults infected with rhinovirus left behind virus on about a third of the objects and surfaces they touched in their daily activities. For example, the most frequently contaminated objects in 15 individually occupied hotel rooms were door handles, pens, light switches, television remote controls, faucets and telephones. Surprisingly, the investigators noted that only one out of 10 rooms had a contaminated toilet handle.

During your travels your baby will need a place to sleep, and there often isn't room to pack or check-in a play yard or portable crib at the airport. Many hotels now provide these to rooms upon request, but how well have they been cleaned or disinfected?

Allison Costa, a mother of twin boys in Studio City, Calif., became worried about how to keep her play yard clean after her sons kept getting sick. She noticed that many of the play yards provided by hotels weren't cleaned properly. Based on her concerns and observations, she designed a play yard cover (www.coverplayard.com) that is machine washable and fits over most standard play yards to help set parents' minds at ease. "The beauty of our product is that it makes sense," say Costa, who counts Hilton, Disney and Club Med hotels among her current clients. "Play yards are very difficult to clean and a good majority of the travel industry provides their young guests with these cribs."
