Still Not Sleeping Through the Night
Tips for Getting Your Almost 1-Year-Old to Sleep
By Keath Castelloe Low
Exhaustion and being a new parent go hand in hand. Somehow our bodies simply adjust to the lack of sleep in those early months. But what's a parent to do when the baby is nearing his first birthday and still is not sleeping through the night?
Sometimes we simply face the world in our zombie-like trance. Susi Ajaye, a mother from Alexandria, Va., recalls spending her days the first year of motherhood often in a haze. "Did I say often? Always!" Ajaye says.
Even the simplest tasks became difficult. "One time I didn't even remember what name to sign in the supermarket," says Ajaye, who admits that she isn't sure how she managed to cope in this extended period of utter exhaustion. "People would want to talk to me and I couldn't follow the conversation." Luckily, her son is now sleeping through the night. In fact, Ajaye recalls exactly when this began – he was 12 months and 2 weeks old.
Sometimes we just adapt to having little ones who don't sleep. "When my son was a year old, he'd only slept through the night once or twice ... as far as being tired, I've been tired since the day he was born!" says Kristie Buckley from Hart, Mich. Buckley worked out a system with her husband. She took care of night duty, but was able to catch up on sleep during the mornings while her husband took care of morning duty with their son. Unfortunately, Buckley and her husband are now divorced and since she has been on her own, it has been easier to just let her son crawl into bed with her when he can't sleep. At least this way, they both get needed sleep.
