Nutrition in a Jar
Choosing and Using Commercial Baby Foods
By Renee Roberson
"If you put that in the microwave, it can get very hot," Ward says. "Most kids do fine with foods that are at room temperature."
Baby food companies have made traveling with pureed food much easier since the invention of versions in disposable containers with snap-on lids. The food typically doesn't need to be refrigerated before use and there's no risk of having breaking glass in your car or luggage.
Ward says if parents feeds their baby out of one of these containers during travel, it's best to throw away what hasn't been used to prevent spoilage and bacteria growth, since you most likely won't have a cooler or ice pack to help keep the food at the appropriate temperature. This also keeps you from having to worry about putting the food in a separate container for the feeding.
So if you've made the choice to serve your baby jarred baby food, do your research before heading to the grocery store and getting overwhelmed by hundreds of small jars staring back at you from the shelves. If you've decided to buy organic, look up which organic brands get the best reviews and decide which organic fruits and vegetables are most important for your individual baby's diet. Be sure to stock up on the disposable varieties of food to make life easier when eating out or traveling. And always follow the manufacturer's direction on the jar in terms of heating and storing the food. It may take several tries before you find the right brands for your baby, but there are plenty of choices to best suit every family's needs.
