Baby Rattles

Make Sure Baby's First Toy Is Safe and Fun

Novak points out that being familiar with the reputation and safety record of the manufacturer can go a long way toward ensuring the safety of a rattle. "There are several fabulous companies that have been making baby toys for 30 or more years and that have strict safety standards," she says. "If a parent hasn't heard of the brand, it could still be a great company, but they may want to do a little research first – or buy from a company that they trust to have done all of the research."

Healthy Baby, Healthy Environment

The trend toward purchasing organic products has made its way to baby rattles as well, a move that many say is a win-win for babies and the environment. "Since rattles are constantly mouthed by babies, it's important that no harmful materials are in them," says Pam Davis, owner of Our Green House, a Sandy Hook, Conn.-based toy and baby goods store. "An organic rattle is made from cotton that's grown without chemicals and pesticides. And natural wooden rattles are finished with nontoxic finishes."

Many today believe that organic is best for babies. This is because of the chemicals that are used on many non-organic materials, which can work their way into the baby's system if he chews on them or just puts them in his mouth. Chemicals entering into a growing baby can cause problems. Plus, for the environmentally included person, the process of making them is much easier on the planet. Through the creation process and up to the end process, organic products are usually easier on the environment, while plastic ones may end up in landfills.
