Co-sleeping Positions

Keep Baby Safe in Your Co-sleeping Environment

Indeed, like sleeping positions, how to nurse while co-sleeping is something you'll have to figure out. Kim's daughter would wake her when she was hungry. Kim turned her on her side facing her – until she was old enough to do that herself – then she'd nurse and they'd both fall back asleep.

Though Dr. McKenna recommends not co-sleeping with more than one child, some people are brave enough to try co-sleeping as a family. Since she's pregnant with her second child, Kim is still deciding what she's going to do. "At first we thought we'd have to move big sister out of the room, but other co-sleeping parents tell us their older kids can sleep right through nighttime feedings and disturbances, and don't seem to be sleep deprived, so it's certainly an option to have both kids in the room with us," Kim says.

If it's worth it to you to co-sleep, the logistics will work out. "Temperamentally, our family is suited to co-sleeping and this kind of closeness is important to us, so we chose to prioritize it," Kim says.

Benefits of Co-sleeping

According to an LLLI press release, studies have shown that co-sleeping promotes bonding, regulates the mother and baby's sleep patterns, plays a role in helping the mother to become more responsive to her baby's cues and gives both the mother and baby needed rest. The co-sleeping environment also assists mothers in the continuation of breastfeeding on demand, an important step in maintaining the mother's milk supply.
