What Herbs Are Safe, What's Not?

Stomach Discomfort:
Peppermint (Mentha piperita)
Synonyms: Brandy Mint
Peppermint is widely used to treat a variety of uncomfortable stomach conditions such as flatulence, stomachache and colic. Peppermint can also help alleviate gum pain caused by teething.

Side effects: In large doses peppermint may cause burning or stomach upset.

Skin Conditions:
Calendula (Calendula officinalis)
Synonyms: Marigold
Used externally, calendula is excellent for soothing skin conditions such as cradle cap, eczema and diaper rash.

Side effects: Rare. Contact dermatitis, anaphylactic or eczematous reaction.

Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
Synonyms: Tea Tree Oil
Tea Tree Oil is a strongly aromatic, powerful disinfectant. Useful in treating a wide variety of skin conditions such as fungal infections, acne and minor scrapes and cuts. It should not be taken internally.

Side effects: Skin irritation, allergic reaction.
