Baby Blessings
10 Reasons to Cherish the First Year
By Becky Lane
"Watching them watch the world for the first time," could be one of the greatest gifts of your baby's first year, Green says. Seeing your baby as she observes birds and trees or the vast blue ocean for the first time (and knowing you were there for those first moments) can give you a newfound appreciation for life you never knew you needed.
This one may not yet be fully appreciated by parents without older children, but when your precious baby is a wisecracking kid you'll look back on the nonverbal baby days fondly.
Without an ability to express herself in words, your baby won't protest at whatever outfit you pick out for her. You can take her places without negative comment. And you have the best listener in the world, someone who will soak up everything you say without interrupting (too much).
Whether it's your first or your fifth, there's nothing like a new baby in the family to remind you of your never-ending capacity for love. "You never know how much you could love someone else until the first sight of your child," Green says.
And the magical thing is that this is true for each baby. Somehow, your love grows more than you ever thought it could. It makes you want to be a better parent, a better person. Now that's a blessing.
