"When these feelings arise, help your children to understand their emotions by labeling them. 'You are feeling angry because Mommy is helping May right now. I know it is hard to wait. I will help you as soon as I finish with May.' Continue to point out the unique qualities in each child. Praise them both for their efforts. Nurture them equally. Though sharing is important, it is also important for each child to have things that are completely theirs. Identify toys that are shared toys and toys, clothes, blankets or loveys, etc. that belong to each child individually."
Modeling gentle behavior for your son is a great way to teach him the appropriate way to interact with his young sister, Low says. "As you hold your daughter, ask your son to come sit together with you," she says. "Talk with him in a gentle voice about how delicate babies are. Stroke your daughter's arm gently. 'See how softly we need to touch her?' Invite your son to touch his sister's arm. Guide his hand as he carefully loves on her. Praise him for the wonderful job he is doing. 'You are such a good big brother. You know how to be gentle and loving'"
