"But when this desire is thwarted, such 'simple matters' as upper torso strength, rotation of the head, visual tracking, motor development and so forth become much more difficult to achieve, often eventually requiring intervention from such professionals as physical and occupational therapists," Pica says.

Does my baby get anything out of games like Itsy Bitsy Spider, or is it purely for entertainment?

Finger imitation songs like "Itsy Bitsy Spider" or "Pat-a-Cake" not only stimulate Baby's brain with music, but teach rhyme, vocabulary, language and gestures, Hudon says. "Furthermore, singing can stimulate areas of the brain that promote peaceful feelings and can sooth a crying baby," she says.

Whether you're singing, signing, reading or just talking, learning is taking place all day long! "These loving interactions will help your baby's language flourish," Hudon says. "So tell her about your day, whistle while you work and read her a recipe because language is the foundation of your baby's lifelong learning."
