Car Seat No-nos

Simple Rules to Keep Your Children Safe While Restrained

Other Factors to Consider

Traveling with your infant strapped into a rear-facing car seat can be nerve-wracking for a new parent. If your baby starts to cry, it's hard to tell what's causing the distress. Because of this, many parents invest in a small, plastic "mirror" they can position on the backseat to help them see their baby's face in their own rearview mirror.

"It's important to have a baby mirror installed so that you can easily see your baby as you're driving," Rhodes says.

Dr. Hallas points out that parents should also be mindful when transporting both a small baby and a family pet in the same car, especially large dogs. Animals often like to jump from the front seat to the back seat, and during their excitement, they could hurt an infant in a car seat by accident.

As in many situations regarding small children, there are exceptions to the rule. What parent hasn't handed crackers and juice to their toddler while running an errand to keep the peace? If nothing else, the experts agree that sippy cups are a pretty safe bet for toddlers who don't want to wait for the next stop to take a drink. Longer trips in the car may require a little bending of the rules as well, but for the most part, following the above guidelines will help keep all your littlest passengers safe until you reach your next destination.
