Twins on Different Timetables

How to Get Your Life (and Sanity) Back on Track

A similar routine worked for Stefanie Asin from Houston, Texas. "When I brought my kids home I was told to make sure they were on the same schedule no matter what," Asin says. "So we would put the girls down together, and when the first one woke up for any reason, we automatically woke up the other, even if she was sound asleep. It was counterintuitive to do this, but it worked. Within a month, we had them both sleeping and eating at the same time. It made our lives as sleep-deprived parents much better, although it was still hard nursing them both at the same time."

Like Freiberg and Asin, Kathryn Manos, a mom from Encino, Calif., also offers up scheduling as the most important advice new parents of twins can take. "Every three and a half to four hours I would wake them up to eat," she says. "If they wanted to eat after two hours I'd play with them and distract them or give them a pacifier to hold them off until it was time. If I finished feeding one and the other one was still sleeping, I'd wake them up and give them a bottle too. I think an infant can get used to a new routine in about four days, but the parent has to be consistent."

"Usually, one twin quickly establishes himself or herself as the hungrier or less patient twin," Dr. Ross says. "Feeding them in this order makes it less likely you will have one baby crying while you are trying to feed the other."
