Tips for a Safe and Fun Christmas Morning with Baby

The holidays are an exciting time for families with a new baby in the house. But the holidays have the potential to wreak havoc on a young baby's expectations and newly established routines, and many new parents find themselves scrambling to keep up with the decorations, holiday parties and get-togethers.

Here are some tips for easing the hectic holidays and helping you and your baby enjoy a safe and magical first Christmas morning.

Oh, Christmas Tree

For many families, trimming a tree and putting up lights are part of a yearly tradition. But for a newly mobile infant, they can be a hazardous danger zone. Teething babies are especially attracted to ornaments and other decorative items.

Meg Braithewaite, a mom of two from Sask, Canada, has always tried to be mindful of Christmas tree safety during the holidays. Her son was 8 months old during his first Christmas, and her daughter will be 9 months old during this season.

"All the ornaments that are on the bottom of our tree are ones that the kids can take on and off and handle without breaking," Braithewaite says. "We also hang strings of LED lights on the trees so the bulbs aren't hot when they are touched."

"Common sense goes a long way with babies and the holidays," says Stacey Graham, a mother of five from Bluemont, Va. "No glass ornaments until they're older. Keep small items up and out of the way. If you're worried about the tree tipping over then bolt it to the wall with a cable."

Say Cheese!

There's no doubt that holiday photo sessions leading up to the big day – with your little one dressed up in a special holiday outfit – are a perfect way to capture your child's first Christmas. But, again, holiday photo sessions can often be hit or miss. Your child may decide he doesn't want to sport a cute Santa hat, or that snack time may be more important than posing for one last picture.
